Steve grew up in a very prodominate Mexican area where he adapted some of the culture there from his other friends. Dia de los Muertos is one of Steve’s favorite holidays in the community, mainly because he likes to watch every one of his mother’s friends come and give their respects to her - especially the Barnes family. James Barnes is Steve’s best friend and - unknown to him - the one that both the rulers of two afterlife worlds, La Muerte and Xibalba, have both made a wager on their relationship: La Muerte bets that James and Steve would marry before both are 21 years of age while Xibalba bets that James and Steve will never truly be able to confess their love.
Years later, when James returns back to their community at the eve of his 21st birthday after being sent to a boarding school in Russia, the wager is back on between the spirits. Meanwhile, Steve denies his fate of becoming a bullfighter that has been pushed upon him by his Uncle Abraham to become a musician, and when comes his time to kill a bull, he refuses but impresses James in the process.
The two meet at an old park where they use to play as children, and Steve professes his love for James. However, when James tries to return the feelings, he is bitten by a snake and presumed dead in Steve’s arms. In that moment, Steve is approached by an old man who promises to bring James back for a small fee in which Steve accepts, only to be bitten twice by the same snake and killed while James awakens.
